Byker is situated in a great location, close to the city centre with lots of facilities both on the estate and within a 10 to 15 minute walk. It is the perfect location for shopping and leisure. With the Metro and excellent bus services situated on the estate Byker offers easy access to the whole of the region.
The estate has churches, two primary schools (Church of England and Roman Catholic), a pub, social clubs, its own shops. There is a library, swimming pool, gym and even a climbing wall nearby. The Byker Community Trust Office is at the centre of the estate and provides a wide range of services to help you.
There is a great sense of community within the BCT estate. There are active tenants and residents groups who have a strong sense of pride in their homes and are passionate about improving the area for themselves, their families and their neighbours. Byker is a popular places within the city, to live, with millions of pounds being invested in the area! BCT has agreed new funding arrangements with the Yorkshire Building Society (YBS), which will mean we can build on the fantastic regeneration work we’ve already done.
Our initial loan from YBS provided access to £12 million but now we’re able to borrow up to £26 million during the ten years from January 2015. We’ve managed to secure a better interest rate, which will provide even more value for money.
BCT will use this better deal to further develop the Byker Estate. Following on from converting Avondale House into a home for armed forces veterans, transforming Chirton House into a stunning new apartment complex and refurbishing the Byker Wall, we will continue to consult with you about your priorities for Byker and plan further regeneration in response to this.
The current investment programme includes;
- Comprehensive redesign and environmental upgrade of the estate is planned
- Refurbishment of Hobby Rooms for use by the community and/or social enterprise
The BCT has a wide range of properties in all different sizes, so there is something for everyone. Homes are modern inside and always warm and cosy. There are smaller flats suitable for students which are close to the two universities and colleges. Spacious family homes and two sheltered housing schemes for older residents.
Homes on the BCT estate also offer lots of outdoor space where you can sit outside to meet with your neighbours or let your children play, in secure gated areas.
The estate was designed and built to tie in with the landscape, so many properties have great views and are south/south west facing so get lots of sunshine.
Set weekly heating charge
As a BCT tenant you would benefit from a district heating system, which means that you get your hot water and heating for a set weekly charge. This means that in the winter you don’t have to worry about getting large heating bills for keeping the heating on.
