Newcastle Quayside water safety event

Join Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service for a free family-friendly day of water safety education, live rescue demonstrations and practical advice on staying safe around open water.

On Sunday 5 July, you're invited to attend the Newcastle Quayside Water Safety Event 2026, a community event designed to raise awareness of water safety and help people enjoy the region's rivers, coastline and waterways safely.

Taking place from 10:30am to 3:00pm, the event will bring together water safety specialists and emergency service organisations to provide expert guidance, interactive displays and live demonstrations showcasing how rescue teams respond to incidents on and around the water.

Visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn essential water safety advice for all ages.
  • Watch live casualty rescue demonstrations.
  • See throwbag rescue techniques in action.
  • Meet local emergency service and rescue organisations.
  • Discover how to stay safe when swimming, boating, paddleboarding, fishing or enjoying waterside activities.
  • Ask questions and receive practical safety guidance from experienced professionals.

You'll also be able to experience the Quayside Sunday Market when you visit. This vibrant outdoor market located along the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne offers a diverse range of stalls featuring handmade goods, fresh produce, street food, and specialty items from regional vendors.

Why water safety matters

Whether spending time along the River Tyne, visiting the coast or taking part in recreational water activities, understanding the risks associated with open water can help prevent incidents and save lives.

The Water Safety Event will offer practical tips on recognising hazards, responding in an emergency and knowing what actions to take if someone gets into difficulty in the water.
