As part of our commitment to improving the area around Dunn and Northumberland Terrace, a selection of large trees have been removed as part of the environmental improvement works.
While these particular trees needed to be removed to support the overall redesign of the space, we recognise the vital role that trees play in our neighbourhoods and for the environment. Trees enhance the appearance of an area, improve air quality and support biodiversity. For these reasons – as well as in line with Newcastle City Council’s Tree Policy – we've ensured that replacement trees are planted as part of the scheme.
The new trees are much smaller and will create much less shade, meaning the area with stay light and spacious.
They have also been selected to give seasonal interest (blossom in spring / summer and berries and leaf colour in the autumn). As well as looking better, they will also be much better for wildlife.
Dunn Terrace – an ornamental Rowan
Northumberland Terrace – ornamental Crab Apple
Low Fold & Clive Place – eating apple trees (variety = ‘Katy’)
The trees will not affect the large green recreational spaces in the area. Please treat nature and wildlife around the estate with respect as it is very important in maintaining the biodiversity of the area.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to remind customers that cutting down or a tree without proper authorisation or purposely damaging a tree can lead to legal action.
Thank you for your help in keeping Byker cleaner and greener.
