Keeping you, your family and your neighbours safe is our top priority. With Bonfire Night approaching, here are some simple ways to stay safe and help protect our community.
Attending official licensed events away from the estate is the best and safest way to enjoy bonfire night. Keeping fireworks in your home is incredibly dangerous and is a fire risk to yourself and your neighbours.
Last year, Firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue responded to 521 deliberate fires between the 17 October and 17 November 2025. Every deliberate fire requires a response from firefighters and can take resources away from other emergencies across the region.
Advice from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue on keeping you and your home safe:
• Try to put out your wheelie bin as close to your emptying time as possible to avoid antisocial behaviour by others.
• Bring in your wheelie bin as soon as possible after rubbish collection.
• Don’t stack additional bin bags to the side of your wheelie bins. Any bulky items should be discarded in the appropriate manner by using your local Household Waste and Recycling Centres (which is next to the Byker Estate).
• It is illegal to set off fireworks in the street or other public places.
• Antisocial behaviour involving fireworks can lead to potential fines or prosecution. Also, if you are caught and identified as a Karbon customer you will face action against your tenancy.
If you see unsafe bonfires or the misuse of fireworks, please report it:
• Report non-emergency concerns to Northumbria Police by calling 101 or contact Newcastle City Council.
You can also report any fires in your local community anonymously to Firestoppers on 08001695558
