Byker street market success

Residents from Byker and beyond headed down to Raby Cross for the Byker Estate’s first ever street food market during the October half term.

Following the success of a series of street food markets in Stanley in North Durham, an initiative organised by food market specialists Baccanalia and sponsored by Karbon Homes, the two organisations have once again partnered to bring an event to the Byker Estate, designed to bring the community together and promote pride in place.

The market, which took place on Thursday 30 October featured a range of food vendors, gift shops and activities for residents to enjoy.

Community partners including Byker Mutual Aid, Byker Pantry and Byker Sands Family Centre also attended, running various activities for attendees such as crafts, chess and free candy floss.

Silvie Fisch, who is an Independent Committee Member in Byker and runs Byker Mutual Aid, said: “The market has been such a fun event. It really brought people together and showed the great potential this area of Byker holds for community activities.".

Karbon Homes, which owns and manages the Byker Estate, ran a range of activities including face painting and a Halloween costume competition with voucher prizes for the lucky winners. Sponsorship of the markets forms part of Karbon’s Fair Foundations approach to place shaping, which focuses on delivering projects that support social growth.

Victoria Keen, Place Lead at Karbon Homes, said: “Byker is an incredibly vibrant, strong community, and we’re always looking for ways to make the area even better for the residents on the estate and beyond.

“We’ve had a great response to the markets and saw Byker as another opportunity to host one, with the intention of bringing something new to the estate for the community to enjoy.

“Making sure we brought a varied range of vendors and stalls along with giving our community partners the opportunity to further engage with the community was very important, and with Baccanalia organising the event that’s what we were able to achieve.

“We’re continuing to explore other initiatives we can support that have a similar effect, promoting pride and wellbeing in the Byker community.”

Since 2021, Karbon Homes has been investing in the Byker Estate through various investment projects and its place shaping approach, to make Byker an even better place for the community and beyond.
